In our house, building is more than a hobby. It is a way of creating and connecting. We are always thinking of new ideas, so when we found SlabDreamLab’s Gray Starter Baseplates, we knew they would be the perfect foundation for our city-building. Thank you to SlabDream Lab for sponsoring this blog post.
Getting started is easy. The plates use a tongue and groove system that slides together smoothly, giving us one large connected surface for building. We lay them out, flip them over, and add the clips that come with the set. They fit right into the notches on the plates, and in just a few minutes our build space is ready. We also like to attach a few bricks across the seams before we start building. It keeps everything connected while still giving us plenty of flexibility to change things around. The baseplate surface is the perfect blank canvas for whatever we want to make next. Cities, neighborhoods, roads, gardens, and more!
Once the baseplates are set up, the fun really begins. My kids’ imaginations seem to grow with the size of the space. A simple house becomes part of a whole community with parks, cars, bridges, and shops. They build big, walk away for a while, and come back later to add more details. The gray starter pack holds our bricks in place, so they can experiment and rebuild.

One of my favorite things about this product is how naturally it encourages all types of play. There is physical play and fine motor development when they connect bricks. There is cognitive play when they figure out how pieces fit together or solve a tricky design problem. There is communicative play when they share ideas and explain their plans to each other. Social play happens when siblings or friends work together on a shared project. Even sensory play is part of the experience through the feel of the bricks, the colors, and the hands-on creativity.
I also love how it gives the kids a place to keep coming back to. The baseplates can hold yesterday’s ideas while making room for today’s new ones. One day the space might be a busy downtown with skyscrapers and traffic. The next day it might be a mall, a racetrack, or a zoo.
Over time we have built architecture sets, busy city streets, construction sites, apartments, homes, pools, gardens, and cars. Each build feels fresh because the kids are always coming up with new storylines to bring their creations to life.
Building together has become one of our favorite family activities. It is creative, screen-free, and something everyone can be part of. Some of my favorite memories are building with my kids.
